A New Pair of Glasses

January 29, 2012

Did you know your past is a treasure and that your experiences with adversity can become your biggest asset?  The definition of adversity is; a state of hardship or affliction; misfortune or a calamitous event.

I will never forget the day I was driving in my car and realized that all of the things I had been through in the past (the good, the bad and the ugly) gave me incredible character and made me the amazing person that I am today!  The adversity that I experienced in my past has made me passionate, empathetic, and strong!  Here are some examples of how I have turned my adversity into character assets:

(1)

Adversity:       Because we moved so often, I went to fourteen different schools.  It was difficult; I spent a lot of time sad, lonely and fearful.

Asset:              I have experienced many different cultures and places.  I have learned to fit in just about anywhere and I get along with many types of people. Roots are very important to me now and I love being a part of my community.

(2)

Adversity:       I experienced domestic violence and trauma and many other things that no child should have to endure.

Asset:              I am resilient and strong.  I protect, nurture and provide safety and security for my children.  I know what I want and don’t want in my intimate relationships and don’t settle for less than what I deserve.  I treat others with dignity and respect to the best of my ability.  I support and set healthy boundaries around my own safety.

(3)

Adversity:       I became addicted to drugs, had no regard for myself or those around me and participated in self-centered and self-defeating thinking and behavior.

Asset:              My self-care and the self-care of others is important.  I respect myself and others and do my best not to participate in behavior that is self-deprecating or hurtful in any way.  I focus on the positive. I am a miracle and I can change my life and my future any time I choose.

Being optimistic means putting on a new pair of glasses!…….Optimists Rock!
