Extraordinary You!

February 18, 2013

Why would someone in their right mind continue to think negatively despite knowing they can choose positive, healthy, affirming thoughts instead?  Here are a few reasons that people have shared with me over the years about some of the challenges they’ve experienced when changing their negative thinking;

  • Fear of Change– It is easy to get caught up in catastrophizing and automatically thinking about the worst case scenarios especially if you are in the habit of cultivating and nurturing negative thoughts, but they are just thoughts!   The truth is, change can be fantastic, exciting, even fulfilling!  Change can push and stretch us to new heights and give us valuable lessons in personal development.  If you are open to change, you will surely grow in leaps and bounds.
  • A Need to Stay in Your Comfort Zone– Even if your comfort zone is negative, it still feels safe and at least you know what to expect.  This leads to the illusion ( and yes, it is only an illusion) that you are in control.  But think about it, what can you really control on this planet with the exception of your own behavior?  Stepping out of your comfort zone means you are opening your heart to new experiences. There is great freedom in letting go and staying open!
  • Lack of gratitude– If you don’t appreciate and acknowledge the good in your life, why would you feel happy inside to begin with?  Be grateful, practice gratitude for who you are, and what you have in your life!  Begin in the morning while you are still in bed and acknowledge the good things about yourself and your life.  Are you a great parent?  A hard worker, a compassionate person?  What would someone who loves you say about you?  Treat yourself like that and be grateful for what you have.  This leaves you open for more of the good stuff and makes you feel good about yourself and when you feel good about yourself, good things naturally happen.

You are extraordinary, exceptional!  This is what each of us really are.  Believing in yourself means acknowledging your unique attributes and having the faith that you can do anything you put your mind to.  You can take positive action to change your negative thinking even if you can’t yet see or imagine the positive outcomes.

Don’t let your negative thinking keep you stuck!  Life is short so let’s ride it until the wheels fall off…and remember, Optimists Rock!
