Your Attitude is Everything

November 18, 2013

Your attitude is your personal weather man and describes what your internal climate is.  If you want to change your life, change your attitude.  When something is disturbing to you or you find something wrong with someone or something, take personal responsibility because after all, it is YOUR attitude!  Change your perception and you will find you will begin to experience peace of mind despite the storms that life sends your way. Change your perception and these same storms may even become opportunities to build your character.

Optimists exude positivity and their joy is contagious.  I knew a gal who made me feel so important each time I saw her.  I bumped into her maybe three or four times a year and she had been a mutual acquaintance of mine for some time.  Every time I saw her she was very excited to see me and would take both of my hands in hers and exclaim “Oh Robin!  I am so glad to see you.  How have you been?”  It was not what she said, it was the way she said it- she really meant it!  I felt like looking behind me sometimes to make sure she was talking to me!

The last time I saw my friend, I did not know it would be the last time I would ever see her.  We chatted briefly and as always, she was so gracious and happy to see me and after a few minutes we went our separate ways.   A few months later I opened the paper only to see her obituary.  She was 35 years old and had experienced a long battle with cancer.  I had no idea! She had never mentioned that she had been sick and I felt so sad because I would have loved to tell her how much her positivity helped me and how much I appreciated her spirit.

The lesson for me was to treat everyone like she did, important and relevant, and to do my best to carry on her legacy by greeting people with joy, and really being present.  She was a path lighter, a joy carrier and great example of someone with a positive attitude!  Look for the silver lining.  In every situation there is opportunity to grow.

Look for the positive in every situation no matter how bleak it may appear.   Identify it, say it out loud, own it and share it with others.  Do you know someone who has modeled a positive attitude in your life?  I would love to hear your stories and get your comments about those who have touched your life in positive ways!
